TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — It was a heartwarming morning inside Amalie Arena, as patients of Florida Cancer Specialists and their families got to step away from treatment and instead enjoy a special day with their favorite team, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“This was our outlet to put that behind us for a few hours, just have fun, and cheer for our team,” said Doreen Rooks, who is currently battling breast cancer. “They do so much for so many people, they make everyone feel special.”
The group received a behind-the-scenes look at Lightning hockey from one of the newest members of the Bolts Hall of Fame, Brian Bradley, a visit from ThunderBug, a private viewing of Lightning practice and a meet and greet with Lightning forward Mitchell Chaffee.
“It’s awesome they’re even able to come out here and supports us,” said Chaffee. “They’re taking their time to come out and support us which is pretty amazing. A lot of people are affected, and families are affected in one way or another so it’s just awesome I can take a little of my time and make their days.”
For Chaffee, this event hits close to home. His mom Kathy has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. So, he knows firsthand how special it is for these patients to get out and enjoy an experience like this.
“It’s a big part of our life. Like I said, being there and supportive not only as a family member, but you also try and support other people, especially all these people coming out there. You want to cheer for them and support them any way you can.”
